May 13, 2026

The Georgetown County Library’s “A Glorious Cause” series continues this Thursday, May 14, with a special presentation by Chef and Farmer Matthew Raiford. The event will take place at 2:00 pm at the Southern Georgetown Library, located at 4187 Powell Road.

Raiford, a Gullah Geechee descendant whose family roots trace back to the historic Plantersville area of Georgetown County, will present on historic Gullah foodways. Attendees will have the opportunity to sample “Reezy-Peezy,” a traditional dish made with authentic Carolina Gold rice, served with a variety of dipping sauces.

A former Associate Professor of Culinary Arts at the College of Coastal Georgia, Raiford is the author of the critically acclaimed cookbook, Bress ‘n’ Nyam: Gullah Geechee Recipes from a Sixth-Generation Farmer. He currently operates Gilliard Farm in Brunswick, Georgia, a property that has been in his family for generations. Raiford is a frequent visitor to the Georgetown Library, where he conducts genealogical research into his ancestors’ history in the region, including their associations with Chicora Wood.

The “A Glorious Cause: South Carolina and the American Revolution” series is free and open to the public. Due to a schedule change, Raiford is stepping in for the May 14 session originally featuring Chef Sallie Ann Robinson.
