City of Charleston announces overhaul of Tourism Management Plan
May 19, 2026The City of Charleston announced it will overhaul its Tourism Management Plan, which has not been comprehensively updated since 2015.
The revised plan will be shaped by community input, data-driven analysis, and expert recommendations. Key areas will focus on tourism data and metrics, policy and enforcement, distributing visitor activity beyond the peninsula, and a public awareness campaign to encourage visitors to live like a local.
“Our residents are the heart of Charleston,” said Mayor William Cogswell. “Their experiences, perspectives, and ideas are essential as we shape a tourism strategy that supports our economy while preserving the character and livability of our city.”
Public engagement will be central to the process. The city will host community meetings and launch a dedicated webpage where residents can review materials and learn how to participate. Engagement opportunities will be announced in the coming months.
City officials plan to have the reimagined plan to be complete by the end of the year.
Residents are encouraged to follow the City of Charleston on social media and subscribe to the City newsletter for project updates, engagement opportunities, and ways to provide feedback throughout the process.
