Laurens County Coroner’s Office Commissions Two Human Remains Detection K9s

May 20, 2026
The Laurens County Coroner’s Office has commissioned two nationally certified Human Remains Detection K9s, expanding its investigative capabilities for death investigations and search operations across Laurens County and surrounding areas.
Jeffra, a German Shepherd, and Ellie, a Golden Retriever, were officially commissioned on May 13, 2026. Both K9s are certified in land and water human remains detection through the American Mantrailing Police and Working Dog Association.
“We are so proud to add Jeffra and Ellie to our team. These K9s will be a tremendous asset in helping us serve Laurens County and the surrounding areas, and the best part is it came at no cost to our citizens,” said Laurens County Coroner Patti Canupp.
The program was established through a partnership with Foothills Search and Rescue and Astro Kennels at no cost to Laurens County or its citizens.
Also joining the program is Jeff Fowler, Search Manager of Foothills Search and Rescue and owner of Astro Kennels. Fowler previously served as a supervisor with the Greenville County Coroner’s Office for 13 years and brings extensive experience in search, recovery, and investigative operations as a certified dog handler.
The K9 teams will serve as a resource to the Coroner’s Office and partnering agencies throughout the region.
