Georgetown to mark nation’s 250th anniversary with week-long ‘Carolina Days’ celebration

Georgetown County is set to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary with a week-long “Carolina Days Celebration,” honoring both the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the region’s pivotal role in the American Revolution.

The festivities, organized by the Georgetown 250 Committee, will run from June 27 through July 5, 2026. The event series aims to educate the public on the local history, places, and individuals that shaped South Carolina’s revolutionary contributions, specifically commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Sullivan’s Island—a crucial early American victory that helped turn the tide of the war.

The celebration kicks off Saturday, June 27, at the Georgetown Growers Market with a Colonial-themed opening ceremony featuring patriotic music, local dignitaries, and a presentation of the Colors by the Georgetown Fire Department Color Guard. Attendees will also have the opportunity to sign large-scale replicas of the Declaration of Independence.

Local history will take center stage on Sunday, June 28, for “Carolina Day,” featuring an educational program and procession from Francis Marion Park to Joseph Rainey Park to discuss the Charters of Freedom and honor the Battle of Fort Sullivan. 

The schedule of events includes:

• Monday, June 29 (Explore Georgetown): Local museums and historic sites will offer discounted admission from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., highlighting the stories and figures of the local Revolutionary war effort.

• Tuesday, June 30 (Carolina Kids): Family-friendly programming at the Kaminski House and Front Street will feature the “Foxes on Front” ribbon-cutting and an inaugural scavenger hunt.

• Thursday, July 2 (Honor Georgetown): A commemoration program and special tour will take place at the historic Prince George Winyah graveyard, the final resting place of 13 Revolutionary War veterans.

• Saturday, July 4 (Independence Day Celebration): Independence Day events begin with the opening of a 1976 time capsule at the Georgetown County Courthouse at 9:30 a.m., followed by an evening concert on the Kaminski House lawn and a fireworks display.

• Sunday, July 5 (The Great Georgetown Cookout!): The celebration concludes at Maritime Park with a community-wide cookout designed to bring neighbors together.
