May 20, 2026

Senior Engineer DJ Jackson of the Laurens Fire Department has been named the 2026 South Carolina State Firefighter of the Year by the American Legion, an honor that drew 42 applicants from across the state.

Jackson was presented the award at the American Legion Convention in Columbia, where he was recognized for his dedication, service and commitment to the community he serves.

“DJ exemplifies everything we look for in a firefighter. His commitment to this department and to the citizens of Laurens is exceptional, and this recognition is well deserved,” said Fire Chief Neil Roberts. “We are incredibly proud of him and look forward to cheering him on as he competes for the national title.”

The American Legion presents the Firefighter of the Year award annually at the state level, with similar honors given to a Police Officer of the Year and First Responder of the Year. American Legion Post 25 of Laurens nominated Jackson for the recognition.

“DJ’s record of service speaks for itself. We are proud to have put his name forward and thrilled to see him earn this honor,” said Kevin Farnsworth, Commander of American Legion Post 25 in Laurens.

With the state title now in hand, Jackson advances to the national Firefighter of the Year competition, which will be held later this year in Kansas City.
