Mauldin Honors Public Safety Leaders: 2025 Officer and Firefighter of the Year Named

The city of Mauldin took time to honor those who protect and serve the community during Monday night’s City Council meeting. In partnership with American Legion Post 271, local officials formally recognized the city’s 2025 Police Officer of the Year and 2025 Firefighter of the Year for their exemplary service and dedication.

The annual awards highlight public safety personnel who go above and beyond the call of duty, demonstrating leadership, professionalism, and a deep commitment to the Mauldin community.

Police Officer of the Year: Sgt. Riley Embree

Sgt. Riley Embree was named the 2025 Police Officer of the Year, recognized by department leadership and peers for his steady guidance, compassion, and unwavering commitment to operational success.

According to commendations read during the meeting, Sgt. Embree is known for a composed, confident leadership style that inspires trust and keeps his team calm during high-stress, critical calls. Beyond his frontline duties, Embree was praised for:

  • Actively mentoring developing officers within the department.

  • Fostering a squad culture rooted in teamwork, accountability, and mutual respect.

  • Continually setting a high standard for law enforcement excellence in the Upstate.

Firefighter of the Year: Engineer Justin Keller

The title of 2025 Firefighter of the Year was awarded to Engineer Justin Keller. Keller was celebrated as a pillar of selflessness and bravery within the Mauldin Fire Department, consistently responding to emergencies with poise and high-level skill.

Over the past year, Keller distinguished himself through extensive professional development and community engagement, which included:

  • Completing 276 hours of rigorous National Registry EMT training to upgrade his emergency medical capabilities.

  • Acting as a dedicated mentor to fellow firefighters.

  • Leading community outreach initiatives with local schools and businesses to promote fire safety and emergency preparedness.

The ceremony brought together city council members, civic leaders from American Legion Post 271, and proud family members to applaud the honorees.
