Celebrates groundbreaking on new $25M freestanding emergency department in Greer

Bon Secours leaders and associates, together with Upstate elected officials, community members and partners, broke ground on a new freestanding emergency department, a $25 million dollar investment that will expand access to high-quality emergency care and enhance the patient and family experience across the region.

Located at 5204 Wade Hampton Blvd., the Bon Secours Greer Emergency Center is designed to meet the needs of a growing community by providing convenient access to emergency care close to home.

“As the Upstate continues to grow, so does the need for convenient, high-quality emergency services,” said Matt Caldwell, market president of Bon Secours – Greenville. “When every minute counts, access to care matters. By expanding care options in Greer, we’re ensuring more families can get the help they need closer to home, when it matters most.”

The approximately 12,500squarefoot facility will include nine exam rooms, including a dedicated trauma room, as well as on-site computed tomography (CT) and Xray imaging. Once open, the freestanding emergency department will offer 24hour access to boardcertified emergency medicine physicians and clinical staff, using the same technology and clinical standards as Bon Secours hospitalbased emergency departments.

“Our freestanding emergency departments operate with the same processes and standards as our hospital-based emergency departments,” said Greta Gue, administrative director of emergency services, Bon Secours – Greenville. “By having our teams work across both settings, we ensure consistent, high-quality care and help patients access the most appropriate level of care as quickly as possible.”

The Greer Emergency Center is part of Bon Secours’ broader effort to expand emergency care across Greenville County. The system previously opened the Upstate’s first freestanding emergency department in Simpsonville, followed by a second in Five Forks earlier this year, and it continues to invest in outpatient and medical center capabilities throughout the region.

Once complete, Bon Secours will operate four freestanding emergency departments in the market, with both the Greer and Powdersville locations expected to open in 2027.

“Guided by our mission of extended the compassionate ministry of Jesus, Bon Secours’ freestanding emergency centers serve as important access points that bring care closer to the communities we serve,” Caldwell added.
