Live 5 News and Lowcountry Food Bank launch “Rise and Shine” campaign to fight summer hunger
June 2, 2026Live 5 News and Lowcountry Food Bank (LCFB) are partnering to launch the Rise and Shine campaign, a community-wide effort running from June 1 through July 31 to help provide nutritious breakfast meals to children and families facing food insecurity across coastal South Carolina.
This marks the third year Live 5 News has supported Lowcountry Food Bank in providing healthy summer meals for Charleston-area children. Rise and Shine encourages individuals, families, and businesses to support neighbors in need during the summer months, when many children lose access to school-provided meals, by making monetary donations or contributing nonperishable breakfast items at 19 drop-off locations, including Colucci’s Jewelers, the Trey Harrell Law Firm, six Trident Dental locations, and 11 Charleston County Public Library branches.
“Summer can be one of the most challenging times for families experiencing food insecurity,” said Nick Osborne, Lowcountry Food Bank President and CEO. “Through the Rise and Shine campaign, our community can come together to ensure children have access to the nutritious meals they need to thrive.”
Community members can participate by donating nonperishable breakfast items such as cereal, oatmeal, peanut butter, canned fruit, granola bars, and nutrition drinks at designated locations throughout the Charleston area during the campaign period.
Monetary donations can be made at lowcountryfoodbank.org, where every dollar donated helps provide three meals for neighbors who face hunger.
Food insecurity remains a pressing issue in coastal South Carolina, affecting more than 204,000 individuals, including more than 48,000 children. During the summer, the need for community support increases as many children lose consistent access to school breakfast and lunch programs.
To help meet that need, Lowcountry Food Bank operates summer feeding initiatives in partnership with libraries, community organizations, and its partner agencies and food pantries that provide free meals to children 18 and younger.
