Public meeting scheduled for Georgetown Steel site cleanup on June 11
June 5, 2026GEORGETOWN, S.C. — A critical step in the future of Georgetown’s waterfront is underway. The South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (DES) has announced a public meeting to discuss the cleanup and redevelopment plans for the former Georgetown Steel site. The meeting will take place on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at 6:00 pm at the historic Winyah Auditorium, located at 1200 Highmarket Street in Georgetown.
The focus of the meeting will be the recently executed Voluntary Cleanup Contract (VCC) for the Liberty River, LLC property (referred to by DES as the Liberty Steel property). Because the site carries a long history of industrial manufacturing, addressing legacy pollution is a vital prerequisite before any new development can move forward.
The public meeting was requested by local advocacy groups, including the South Carolina Environmental Law Project, Winyah Rivers Alliance and the Coastal Conservation League, to ensure that community members have a seat at the table and an opportunity to voice their questions and concerns.
Attendees will hear directly from key stakeholders involved in the remediation process. Representatives scheduled to provide an overview and answer community questions include:
-
SCDES Officials: Overseeing environmental compliance and safety standards.
-
The Developer (Liberty River, LLC): Outlining the future vision for the property.
-
Environmental Consultants: Explaining the technical aspects, scope, and timeline of the cleanup strategy.
Community participation is highly encouraged given the historical importance of this site to the Georgetown area. If you are unable to attend or wish to submit written questions ahead of time, you can email them to [email protected] through June 10.
For further details and updates on the remediation plans, residents can visit the official SCDES Brownfields page.
