The City hosts ribbon-cutting for Dale T. Morris Ecological Park
June 10, 2026The City of Charleston celebrated the opening of the Dale T. Morris Ecological Park on Johns Island on Wednesday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by city officials, state resilience leaders and project partners.
The new park, located at 250 Pottery Lane, was developed as both a flood mitigation project and a community greenspace. The project is the result of a collaboration between the City of Charleston, the South Carolina Office of Resilience and other partners focused on addressing flooding challenges through ecology-centered design.
Charleston Mayor William Cogswell joined representatives from the South Carolina Office of Resilience, engineering firm Ardurra and project stakeholders for the ceremony. Community members were invited to tour the park and explore its recreational amenities, including a playground.
Named in honor of the late Dale T. Morris, the park incorporates water management systems, green infrastructure and public recreation spaces. The design reflects principles of the Dutch Dialogues framework, which Morris helped champion to advance innovative approaches to flood resilience and urban water management.
City leaders said the project demonstrates how infrastructure investments can simultaneously improve flood protection, environmental sustainability and quality of life for residents.
