Mauldin Police Department to Host Free Active Shooter Response Training for Civilians
June 10, 2026In an effort to enhance public safety and equip community members with life-saving skills, the Mauldin Police Department will host a free safety training seminar later this month.
The Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) course is scheduled for Thursday, June 25, 2026, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The presentation will be held in the community training room at the new Mauldin Fire Department Headquarters, located at 955 W. Butler Rd.
Built on the statistically backed “Avoid, Deny, Defend” (ADD) strategy developed by the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) Center at Texas State University, the CRASE curriculum provides civilians with a proven, practical operational plan for surviving active threat situations.
Rather than standard, outdated advice like playing dead or hiding beneath desks, certified law enforcement instructors will guide attendees through:
-
Disaster Response Psychology: Understanding how the human brain reacts under extreme, high-stress conditions.
-
The ADD Strategy: Knowing when and how to safely Avoid (exit the area), Deny (barricade and lock out the threat), or Defend (protect oneself as a last resort).
-
Law Enforcement Integration: Effective ways to interact with and assist arriving police officers to limit confusion during a response.
-
Medical Considerations: Basic, critical steps civilians can take to manage injuries before paramedics can safely enter a scene.
“In a crisis, what you do matters, and having a plan ahead of time can make all the difference,” the department shared in its event announcement.
The seminar is entirely free and open to residents, business owners, faith leaders, and teachers across Mauldin and the greater Greenville County area.
While there is no cost to attend, seating inside the headquarters’ training room is limited.
