Simpsonville Art Center to Host Retrospective Exhibition for Artist Susan Sorrell
June 15, 2026The Simpsonville Art Center is set to showcase decades of vibrant, tactile creativity with its upcoming exhibition, At The Threshold, a major retrospective dedicated to the work of prominent local contemporary artist Susan Sorrell.
The solo exhibition officially opened to the public on June 12 and will remain on display through August 9 inside the art center’s gallery space.
To celebrate the collection, the center will host an official artist reception on Saturday, June 27, from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM, giving the community a formal opportunity to meet the artist and discuss her creative journey.
A Career Defined by Texture and Color
At The Threshold offers a comprehensive look at Sorrell’s evolution as a working artist, bridging the gap between traditional craftsmanship and abstract expressionism. The retrospective prominently highlights her mastery over two distinct mediums:
-
Textile Work: Intricate, heavily embellished fabric art featuring elaborate beadwork, embroidery, and quilted layers that create rich, three-dimensional surfaces.
-
Mixed Media: Avant-garde compositions that blend acrylic paints, found objects, paper ephemera, and experimental textures.
The exhibition serves a dual purpose: it looks back at the foundational techniques that established Sorrell’s reputation in the Southeast art community, while simultaneously offering a sneak peek at the new stylistic directions her future portfolios will take.
Cultivating the Golden Strip Art Scene
Housed in the beautifully restored historic space in the heart of downtown, the Simpsonville Art Center has quickly become a cornerstone for cultural programming in the Golden Strip area. Bringing in career retrospectives like Sorrell’s aligns with the center’s mission to make high-caliber regional art accessible to local residents.
Admission to both the multi-week gallery exhibition and the June 27 reception is free and open to the general public. For more information regarding gallery hours, residents can contact the Simpsonville Art Center or visit the City of Simpsonville’s official cultural affairs website.
