Planning a vacation is the first step of the journey, but what you pack can determine how smoothly that journey goes. Whether you are heading to the cobblestone streets of Europe or a scenic national park, we have rounded up some expert advice to help you travel smarter, not harder.

Health and Wellness

  • Don’t skimp on prescriptions: Always pack at least five extra days of any prescription medications. Flights get delayed and connections are missed; overseas pharmacies often cannot fill foreign prescriptions, and the extra tablets take up negligible space.
  • Carry your own medicine: Ibuprofen and digestive aids like Imodium or Pepto-Bismol are essential. Trying to explain your symptoms at a foreign pharmacy can be a stressful and hit-or-miss experience.
  • Sunscreen: Skip the tourist-area prices and bring your preferred SPF 50 from home.

The Electronics Essentials

  • Power up: You will likely use your phone all day for maps, translation, photography, and tickets. A portable charger is non-negotiable—buy one at home to avoid paying triple at the airport.
  • Adapters: Before you go, ensure you have the correct power adapter for your destination. Don’t rely on hotel reception to have a spare.

Smart Packing Hacks

  • Ziploc bags: These are a traveler’s secret weapon. They are perfect for storing snacks, wrapping liquid-filled bottles to prevent leaks, keeping wet or dirty clothes separate, or even creating an emergency ice pack.
  • The “Return” Bag: Always pack an empty, lightweight foldable duffle bag. You’ll be glad you have the extra space for souvenirs on the trip home.
  • Laundry on the go: If you are traveling for more than a week, pack travel detergent strips. They take up almost no space and allow you to wash items in a hotel sink. They dry in hours, meaning you can pack lighter from the start.

Comfort and Logistics

  • Footwear is everything: Do not make the mistake of wearing brand-new shoes. Break in your walking shoes a month before you leave. Combine them with thick socks and a stash of Compeed blister plasters—a small blister can turn a great trip into a limping one.
  • The right bag: Leave the backpack behind for daily sightseeing. A cross-body bag worn in front with a secure zip is much harder for pickpockets to access.
  • Bathroom fees: Keep a dedicated side pocket in your bag filled with small coins and a pack of tissues. Many public restrooms abroad require a fee and are not always fully stocked with paper.
  • The small details: European hotels often omit face cloths. Pack two; they weigh nothing and will save you from searching the bathroom on your first day.
