Mauldin Officials Remind Residents: Fireworks Strictly Prohibited Within City Limits Ahead of July 4th

As the Independence Day holiday approaches, local public safety officials are issuing a firm reminder to residents regarding firework regulations: discharging fireworks within Mauldin city limits is strictly illegal.

The Mauldin Fire Department, in coordination with the City of Mauldin and the Mauldin Police Department, urged community members to prioritize safety and opt for professional public displays instead of launching consumer fireworks. Under local city ordinance, violators who discharge fireworks within the city boundaries face potential fines and legal penalties.

The annual warning comes amid heightened safety concerns. According to state health data, South Carolina sees nearly 9,700 fireworks-related emergency room visits each year during the peak summer holiday season.

Rules for Unincorporated and Surrounding Areas

For residents living outside the official Mauldin city limits, state laws dictate how and where fireworks can be legally used. Public safety officials outlined the distinct legal thresholds for personal use versus community events:

• Personal Property Use: Individuals legally using consumer fireworks on their own owned or leased property do not require a specialized fireworks license. These private activities are not legally classified as public displays, even if neighbors or bystanders are able to view them.

• Neighborhood and Community Shows: Any coordinated event put on for spectators—such as a homeowners association (HOA) gathering, a cul-de-sac show, or an advertised community event utilizing a single launch site—is legally classified as a Community/Public Fireworks Display.

• Permit Requirements: Coordinated community shows are subject to strict regulation. Organizers must obtain official approval and a permit from the South Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM). Additionally, depending on the grade and type of fireworks being discharged, a licensed pyrotechnic operator may be required to oversee the launch, and all OSFM safety and separation distance requirements must be strictly followed.

Local police and fire personnel emphasize that firework safety is a collective community responsibility.
