Flags at Half-Staff: South Carolina Mourns the Sudden Passing of Senator Lindsey Graham

In the wake of the sudden passing of long-serving U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster has officially ordered all flags atop the State Capitol to be lowered to half-staff immediately.
The executive directive, issued directly by the Office of the Governor, mandates that the state colors remain lowered until further notice to honor Senator Graham’s extensive career and legacy of service to both the state and the nation. In addition to the State Capitol order, Gov. McMaster has requested that flags across all municipal buildings, state facilities, and political subdivisions throughout South Carolina be similarly flown at half-staff in solidarity.
“Lindsey Graham is irreplaceable,” Governor McMaster shared in a statement following the announcement. “The fiercest of fighters for South Carolina and America—and a loyal and steadfast friend.”
A Sudden Loss in Washington
Senator Graham passed away unexpectedly on the evening of Saturday, July 11, 2026, at his home on Capitol Hill at the age of 71. According to a preliminary report released by the District of Columbia medical examiner, the cause of death was determined to be an aortic dissection resulting from arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
The abrupt news sent shockwaves through the capital and across South Carolina, coming just days after the senator returned from an official diplomatic visit to Kyiv, Ukraine.
A Lifetime of Service
Elected to the U.S. Senate in 2002 after serving in the House of Representatives, Graham spent more than two decades establishing himself as a formidable, highly influential voice in American politics. At the time of his passing, he served as the chairman of the Senate Budget Committee and was actively running for re-election in the upcoming November cycle.
Known nationally for his hawkish defense stances, foreign policy expertise, and his evolution into one of former President Donald Trump’s most prominent congressional allies, Graham remained deeply rooted in his home state.
Tributes and the Path Forward
Tributes have poured in from both sides of the aisle, as well as from international world leaders, honoring Graham’s legacy as an institutionalist and a pragmatic legislator. President Donald Trump also issued a nationwide federal proclamation ordering American flags at all public buildings and military installations across the country to be lowered to half-staff through Saturday, July 18.
The visual mandate takes effect immediately outside government complexes, courthouses, and municipal centers throughout the state. Under state protocol, Governor McMaster will task himself with appointing an interim successor to fill Graham’s vacant Senate seat until a permanent representative is determined by voters.
