McElveen Race for The ARK marks 27 years of supporting families affected by Alzheimer’s and related dementias
July 17, 2026The ARK of South Carolina will host the 27th Annual McElveen Race for The ARK on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2026, in downtown Summerville. The event raises funds for programs and services that support individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, as well as the family members and caregivers who care for them.
The race includes a 5K run/walk and a 1-mile fun run, both beginning and ending at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 206 Central Ave., on a USA Track & Field-certified course through historic downtown Summerville. The 5K begins at 7:45 a.m., followed by the 1-mile fun run.
Proceeds from the event benefit The ARK’s programs serving families in Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester and Orangeburg counties. Services include caregiver support groups, educational programs, memory screenings, resource referrals, social respite opportunities and community outreach.
More than 125,000 South Carolinians are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease, while nearly 212,000 family caregivers provide hundreds of millions of hours of unpaid care each year. As the number of individuals affected by Alzheimer’s and related dementias continues to grow, so does the need for resources and support services for families navigating the disease.
“The McElveen Race for The ARK is about much more than crossing a finish line,” said Peg Lahmeyer, executive director of The ARK of South Carolina. “Every day, we meet families who are trying to navigate the challenges of Alzheimer’s and dementia while caring for someone they love. The support generated through this event helps ensure those families have access to education, resources, respite and a community that understands what they’re going through. We are grateful to McElveen and the many runners, sponsors and volunteers who make that possible year after year.”
In addition to individual runners and walkers, the event includes a Corporate Challenge that encourages local businesses to form teams and compete while supporting a local cause. Sponsorship opportunities are available for businesses interested in supporting The ARK and increasing awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias throughout the region.
“The ARK is a lifeline for families when they need it most,” said Jo Rayburn, a caregiver for a loved one living with dementia and volunteer for The ARK. “The support, encouragement and resources I have received helped me through some difficult days. I know firsthand the impact this organization has on families facing dementia and how important the Race for The ARK is to supporting these programs. It’s an opportunity to give back and help ensure these services remain available for others.”
Registration is open for the 5K run/walk and 1-mile fun run. Sponsorship opportunities are available at several levels, including Marathoner, Long Distance, Corporate Challenge and Sprinter sponsorships. Online registration closes at 5:59 PM on Thursday, Aug. 13, 2026. On-site and Race-day registration will also be available.
Awards will be presented to the top three male and female finishers in multiple age groups. An additional $100 prize will be awarded to the first male and first female runner to break the current course records.
