Nourishing Community Health: St. James Health and Wellness hosts 3rd Annual Taste of Compassion Brunch

July 29, 2026

Food is medicine, and on Saturday, Aug. 8, the community has a chance to pull up a chair for a vital cause. St. James Health and Wellness will host its 3rd Annual Taste of Compassion Brunch from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Pawleys Plantation Golf & Country Club, gathering local leaders, advocates, and neighbors to combat food insecurity and fuel the St. James Food Pharmacy program under the inspiring theme, “Feeding One Family at a Time.”

Guests will gather for a morning of food, fellowship and community giving, with brunch selections catered by Pawleys Plantation Resort and samples prepared by Lowcountry Food Bank and other community partners.

Dana Mitchel, director of community and health nutrition for St. James, is scheduled to serve as keynote speaker. Dalilah James of WCBD News 2 will serve as mistress of ceremonies.

The Food Pharmacy was created to address food insecurity as a key part of overall health. The program helps eligible patients access fresh, nutritious foods and offers education to support the prevention and management of chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.

Since its launch, the program has helped thousands of individuals and families gain access to fresh, nutritious foods that might otherwise be unavailable to them. According to Community Outreach Specialist Othelia Britton, the Food Pharmacy reflects St. James’ belief that healthcare extends beyond the exam room and addressing social determinants of health is essential to building healthier communities.

“This brunch is more than a fundraiser — it is a way for the community to help us feed one family at a time while supporting better health outcomes,” Britton said. “Every ticket, sponsorship and donation helps us continue meeting families where they are with access to nutritious food and compassionate care.”

Organizers said the brunch is designed to bring together health care advocates, community leaders, partners and supporters while raising funds for programs that improve the health and well-being of local families.

Tickets are $75 per person. Community members also may support the event through sponsorships, donations, volunteer service and partnerships that help St. James continue providing health care services, outreach programs and nutrition-focused initiatives.
