City of Charleston announces first-ever Resident Academy: applications open

The City of Charleston is now accepting applications for its first-ever Resident Academy, a four-session, in-person program that gives residents a structured, behind-the-scenes introduction to how city government works.
Each session spotlights a different department or service area, combining presentations, facility tours, demonstrations, and opportunities to speak directly with City staff and leadership. Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of how decisions are made, how services are delivered, and how to effectively engage with city government on behalf of their communities.
“I talk with residents all the time, and I wanted to create a space where they can really dive in, ask questions, and walk away feeling more empowered,” said Becca Hopkins, Neighborhood Services Manager. “That kind of connection between residents and their City is what this is all about.”
The Academy is designed to build residents’ understanding of city operations, improve transparency, and strengthen relationships between neighborhood leaders and City departments. All sessions are held in person on the Charleston peninsula.
Sessions will take place:
- Thursday, August 20, 2026, at 5:30 p.m.
- Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at 2:30 p.m.
- Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at 10:30 a.m.
- Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at 2:30 p.m.
Because seating is limited, not all applicants will be accepted, and priority will be given to residents who can commit to attending all four sessions. Interested residents can apply at tinyurl.com/4h9wmjxz by the application deadline of August 8, 2026.
