Mayor’s Youth Council applications open to Laurens high school students
August 18, 2026The City of Laurens is accepting applications for the Mayor’s Youth Council, giving high school juniors and seniors a seat at the table in local government and a chance to shape projects in their own community.
The opportunity is open to students at Laurens District 55 High School and Laurens Academy, as well as homeschool students in the area. City officials are encouraging parents to talk with their students about applying.
Mayor Nathan Senn launched the Mayor’s Youth Council to bring young leaders into the civic life of the city and to give them a direct line to the people making decisions at City Hall. Members represent their peers, weigh in on issues affecting young residents and work alongside the mayor and city leaders on community projects.
The council draws students with a range of interests, including academics, athletics, the arts, public service, community involvement and environmental stewardship. The goal from the beginning has been a group that reflects a broad cross-section of the community rather than a single school or activity.
Students who take part gain practical experience in how a city operates, from budgeting and public meetings to event planning and community outreach. Just as important, they build the kind of leadership habits that carry into college, careers and service back home.
Applications are available online by clicking here. Students and parents with questions about the council or the application process can contact City Hall at 864-984-3933.
For a small city, Laurens has made a steady investment in its young people, and the Youth Council has become one of the clearest examples of that. Students interested in serving are encouraged to apply before the deadline.
