August 19, 2026One night only: pay what you can “Pippin” hits the Mauldin stage Thursday
For one night only, audiences can see the Mauldin Theatre Company’s 10th season opener at whatever price fits their budget.
The Mauldin Cultural Center will host a pay what you can performance of “Pippin” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, at 101 E. Butler Road in Mauldin. It is the only performance in the run with no set ticket price. Attendees decide for themselves what to pay.
Stephen Schwartz wrote the music and lyrics for “Pippin,” and Roger O. Hirson wrote the book. The story centers on a restless young royal who cannot shake the feeling that his life should amount to something remarkable. His search takes him through war, romance and court politics, and none of it delivers what he expected. The answer he lands on has less to do with glory than with the small, quiet parts of an ordinary life.
The show opened the Mauldin Theatre Company’s 10th anniversary season, which carries the theme “Guided by the Light.” Clare Shaffer directs. Fawn Allen handled choreography, working in the angular, tightly controlled movement style that Bob Fosse built into the show’s DNA. Townsend Pass leads a cast of 18 as the Leading Player, the sly narrator who guides Pippin through the story.
The production runs through Aug. 30.
The theater company operates under the Mauldin Cultural Center, which fills its calendar year round with live music, festivals, camps and instructional programming. Details on this production and the remainder of the season are posted at mauldinculturalcenter.org.
