We Are Sharing Hope SC hosts 5th Annual Community Health Fair featuring NASCAR driver Joey Gase

Free community event held in recognition of National Multicultural Donor Awareness Month
We Are Sharing Hope SC (SHSC) hosted its 5th Annual Community Health Fair recently, bringing together residents to share vital resources and recognize National Multicultural Donor Awareness Month. The free event connected attendees with local organizations offering health education, wellness resources, family-friendly activities and information about organ, eye and tissue donation.
Right now, more than 1,200 individuals from multicultural backgrounds are waiting for a lifesaving transplant in South Carolina. Observed each August, National Multicultural Donor Awareness Month raises awareness of the need for organ, eye and tissue donation within multicultural communities and encourages conversations about donation and transplantation.
“We are incredibly proud to host this event for the fifth year, as it reflects our ongoing commitment to serving this community and building meaningful connections that save lives,” said Krystal Cau, Director of Communications at We Are Sharing Hope SC. “By providing access to free screenings and health education during National Multicultural Donor Awareness Month, we are not only addressing immediate wellness needs but also fostering a legacy of organ, eye, and tissue donation that reflects the diverse families we serve across the state.”
Throughout the day, attendees connected with local healthcare providers and community organizations offering resources on physical and mental health, healthy living, kidney health, pediatric safety, behavioral health, hospice care, health insurance and financial wellness, Medicaid education, LGBTQ+ support services and more.
NASCAR driver and donation advocate Joey Gase attended the health fair to meet community members and give them the chance to add their handprint to his car. Gase will be racing in Darlington on September 5. To raise awareness of organ donation, his car will feature the logos of We Are Sharing Hope SC and Donate Life South Carolina along with the handprints. Gase has been a strong advocate for donation since his family made the decision to donate his mother’s organs in 2011.
“Donation has been a huge part of my life since I lost my mom to a sudden brain aneurysm when I was 18. My family made the decision to donate her organs, eyes and tissue, and because of that decision, she was able to save and improve the lives of 66 people,” said Gase. “I’m especially excited to partner with We Are Sharing Hope SC and connect with the South Carolina community. These partnerships have given me the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life, and I know there are so many families across South Carolina who have been touched by donation as donors, recipients, or loved ones. I hope this partnership helps start more conversations and encourages more South Carolinians to say yes.”
The event also featured back-to-school supply giveaways and raffle prizes, including tickets to local attractions. Members of We Are Sharing Hope SC were on-site throughout the event to answer questions about the donation process, empowering attendees to make an informed and share their wishes with family and loved ones.
