Voters head to the polls Tuesday in Republican Senate runoff

South Carolina Republicans will settle a U.S. Senate nomination Tuesday, Aug. 25, when Sen. Darline Graham and U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman meet in a special primary runoff.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voters must present a valid photo ID at check in. Accepted forms include a South Carolina driver’s license, a state DMV issued ID card, a South Carolina voter registration card with a photo, a federal military ID or a U.S. passport.

Graham and Norman advanced from a 10 candidate special primary on Aug. 11 to fill the seat left vacant by the death of Sen. Lindsey Graham in July. Graham finished first with about 33% of the vote and Norman second with about 25%.

Early voting ran Aug. 19 through Aug. 21, and 63,712 voters statewide cast ballots during the three day window.

Not every registered voter is eligible. Anyone who voted in the June Democratic primary cannot vote in the special Republican runoff. Voters who cast ballots in the June Republican primary, or who sat out both June primaries, are eligible. Voters do not have to have participated in the Aug. 11 special primary to vote Tuesday.

Election officials are urging voters to confirm their polling place before heading out, since some locations have changed since the June election. Polling place information and sample ballots are available at scvotes.gov or through the local election office.

The winner becomes the Republican nominee and will face Democratic nominee Annie Andrews in the Nov. 3 general election. Results will be posted at scvotes.gov as precincts report Tuesday evening.
