Laurens County Republican Party sets Summer BBQ and stump meeting for Sept. 10

The Laurens County Republican Party will host its Summer BBQ, billed as “Stumping for Victory: Road to November,” at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, at the American Legion Post 25 facility, 19 Choctaw St. in Laurens.
The event is styled as an old fashion stump meeting featuring Republican nominees ahead of the November general election. The evening will include dinner, music, speakers and raffles with prizes.
“Stump meetings are a Southern tradition, and there is nothing quite like hearing candidates make their case face to face with the people they hope to serve,” said Laurens County Republican Party Chair Valerie Jones. “We want folks to come hungry, bring the whole family and leave knowing exactly who is on the ballot in November.”
Speakers confirmed so far include Sen. Danny Verdin; Rick Shealy, Republican nominee for S.C. House District 14; Laurens County Councilmen Justin Lane and Matthew Brownlee; Councilwoman-elect Nancy Garrison; and school board candidate Nick Babb.
Attorney General Alan Wilson, the Republican nominee for governor, and Solicitor David Stumbo, the Republican nominee for attorney general, are unable to attend because of prior campaign commitments. Organizers hope both will address the group by video.
Tickets are $18 per plate for adults and $12 for children 10 and younger. Organizers said they want the evening to be a family event and encouraged parents to bring their children.
Lee Brothers will cater again this year. The menu includes barbecue pulled pork, macaroni and cheese, green beans, pickles, coleslaw, rolls, tea, banana pudding and cookies.
Members of the Laurens County Republican Party who purchased a $20 membership card at the last convention will receive one free raffle ticket with the purchase of a plate. Tickets for the party’s Red Hot Republican Raffle will be sold that evening, with the drawing held during the event.
