Homes of Hope takes a swing at South Carolina’s growing affordable housing need

For economically disadvantaged families, the cost of housing can determine what is left for groceries, transportation, childcare, healthcare, savings and other necessities. As demand for affordable housing continues to grow, Homes of Hope is bringing business and community leaders together to help address that need through its 2026 Golf Classic on Wednesday, November 4, at The Cliffs at Mountain Park in Marietta.
Homes of Hope has developed 159 affordable housing units since 2020, part of 757 affordable homes developed throughout the organization’s history. Still, the demand is significant. In just two recent months, Homes of Hope received 890 inquiries for affordable housing from individuals and families seeking an affordable place to call home.
The need is particularly important for households with limited incomes. Housing is generally considered affordable when a household spends no more than 30% of its income on housing costs. When those costs exceed that threshold, households are considered housing cost burdened, leaving fewer financial resources available to meet other basic needs.
For Homes of Hope, creating affordable housing is about more than adding units. It is about helping economically disadvantaged households establish the stability necessary to move forward. Eighty-two percent of the households Homes of Hope serves include families with children, making housing affordability an issue that can affect not only the financial stability of a household today, but the opportunities available to the next generation.
The annual Homes of Hope Golf Classic helps generate resources to continue that work.
“The families we serve are working to build stable futures, but housing costs can make that incredibly difficult when so much of a household’s income has to go toward simply keeping a roof overhead,” said Don Oglesby, CEO of Homes of Hope. “The Golf Classic gives our community an opportunity to be part of a tangible solution. Every sponsor, team and supporter helps us create housing that families can afford while opening doors to greater economic mobility.”
Proceeds from the Golf Classic also support Homes of Hope’s Men’s Workforce Development program, a one-year residential job training and mentoring program for men overcoming drug and alcohol addictions. To date, 348 men have graduated from the program, building skills and establishing the foundations for sustainable employment, housing and long-term stability.
Together, Homes of Hope’s affordable housing and workforce development programs address two closely connected components of economic mobility: the ability to afford a stable place to live and the ability to earn a sustainable income.
The 2026 Golf Classic will bring together business leaders, community partners and supporters at The Cliffs at Mountain Park. Sponsorship opportunities and team registrations remain available, but space is limited.
