Laurens library branch adds self-service laptop kiosk, unveiling set for Sept. 11

The Laurens County Public Library System has installed a self-service laptop kiosk at its Laurens Branch, 1017 W. Main St., giving cardholders a new way to access technology inside the building.

An unveiling ceremony is set for 2 p.m. Sept. 11 at the branch.

The kiosk is supported by Laptop Anytime and by a Library Services and Technology Act grant funded through the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The grant program supports projects that address community needs and bring innovative resources to library patrons.

Through the grant, the library system is able to offer 12 laptops for in-library use by cardholders. Patrons check out a laptop by scanning their library card and entering their PIN. Laptops are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

All of the laptops connect directly to the library’s internet service, allowing patrons to complete homework, check email, browse the internet or join a virtual meeting from anywhere in the building.

Library officials said the kiosk reflects the system’s commitment to providing access to technology and modern services throughout the community.

Photography by local artist Mark Guinn adorns the kiosk, adding a visual element to the new equipment. Library staff members encourage patrons to try the kiosk and are available to help those who need assistance.
