Landmark corner at 100 North Main Street sells to Asheville’s Spicer Greene Jewelers as downtown Greenville thrives

One of the city’s most prominent corners transitions from four decades as Ristorante Bergamo to a fourth-generation fine jeweler
GREENVILLE, S.C. – One of downtown Greenville’s most prominent corners has a new owner. Hope Tz Schmalzl, CCIM, commercial broker with C. Dan Joyner Commercial, has represented the sale of 100 N. Main St., the landmark property at the corner of North Main and Coffee streets that has anchored the city’s business district for decades.
The buyer is Spicer Greene Jewelers, the fourth-generation family business that has served as Asheville’s original fine jeweler since 1926. Owners Elliott Spicer and Eva-Michelle Spicer plan to open the Greenville store in [opening date], bringing a dedicated fine jewelry destination back to the heart of downtown, which is currently without one.
The building has stood at the corner since 1904 and has been home to Ristorante Bergamo since 1986. The restaurant is relocating to 942 S. Main St. in Greenville’s West End, near Fluor Field, where it will continue serving the upscale Italian cuisine it has offered downtown for 40 years.

Schmalzl marketed the property over the course of six years, working through the sale of the restaurant business, the building and ultimately the retail space itself. The result places a 100-year-old jewelry and watch store on what listing materials describe as the most prestigious address in Greenville, a high-traffic pedestrian corner steps from upscale retail, corporate offices and the downtown attractions that draw steady foot traffic.
“As a CCIM and a lifelong resident of Greenville, this sale meant far more to me than a transaction,” said Schmalzl. “This is my home. I wanted to be certain that a corner this important was filled with something worthy of it, and Spicer Greene Jewelers is exactly that.”
The corner holds a meaningful place in the story of Greenville’s downtown revival. Chef Nella Gioia opened Ristorante Bergamo in 1986, when much of Main Street sat shuttered and the city’s now-celebrated renaissance had not yet taken hold.
“When I opened Bergamo in 1986, there was very little on Main Street, and no one could promise it would work,” said Gioia. “To watch this corner become part of a thriving downtown, and now to see it pass to another family business, is something I will always be proud of.”
Restaurateur Gian Pietro Ferro, who carried Ristorante Bergamo forward in recent years, is preparing the move to the West End.
“The West End is a wonderful next chapter for us,” said Ferro. “We are grateful for our years on North Main Street and excited for everything ahead at our new home near Fluor Field.”
For the Spicers, the address offers a rare opportunity to plant roots in one of the Southeast’s most vibrant downtowns.

The transaction drew support from Greenville city leadership, who met with the incoming owners and welcomed their investment in the downtown corridor.
