Gritty Gal Marketing marks three years helping Lowcountry businesses make their marketing match their reputation
September 1, 2026Charleston-based consultancy celebrates three years of helping business owners build marketing that better reflects the businesses they’ve worked so hard to grow.
Three years ago, Jenny Yokoyama started Gritty Gal Marketing(opens in new tab) with a pretty clear idea of what she didn’t want to build.
Another traditional marketing agency wasn’t it.
After more than 20 years working in marketing, sales, business development and business operations, Yokoyama had spent plenty of time on both sides of the marketing conversation. Before launching Gritty Gal, she also spent years running her family’s construction and restoration company, experience that gave her a firsthand understanding of what marketing looks like when you’re also responsible for growing the business.
“I know what it feels like to be running a business, spending money on marketing and still wondering if any of it is actually doing much,” Yokoyama said. “I built Gritty Gal to help business owners figure out what’s actually worth their time and money.”
Gritty Gal Marketing launched in Charleston in 2023 around that idea.
Yokoyama doesn’t start by deciding what a client needs before she understands the business. She starts with what is happening now, where the company is trying to go and what is actually getting in the way.
What’s working? What isn’t? What are customers seeing? Where is the company trying to go? And where is the owner spending time or money they don’t need to?
“I talk to business owners who have hired a marketing company, agreed on a strategy and then realized months later they’re still doing the exact same things they started with,” Yokoyama said. “A strategy gives you a starting point. You still have to pay attention to what’s working, what isn’t and be willing to change course.”
Today, Gritty Gal works with small and midsize businesses throughout the Lowcountry on marketing strategy, brand positioning and messaging, websites, social media, local search, recruiting marketing and other growth initiatives.
Many of Gritty Gal’s clients have already built strong businesses through years of good work, repeat customers and word of mouth. The problem usually isn’t the business itself. It’s that the marketing hasn’t kept up with it.
“The reputation is often already there,” Yokoyama said. “But the way people make decisions has changed. Someone can hear your name from a friend they completely trust and still Google you before they ever pick up the phone.”
And then they go online. Maybe the website hasn’t kept up, the reviews are sparse or the messaging sounds like it could belong to anyone in the industry. The business itself may be great, but what a potential customer sees doesn’t always reflect that.
None of those things change the quality of the business behind them. But they can create enough doubt to cost the business the next call.
“Good marketing shouldn’t make a business look like something it isn’t,” Yokoyama said. “It should make it easier for people to understand what’s already good about the business, why that matters to them and why they should feel comfortable choosing it.”
That doesn’t mean every business needs to be everywhere, posting constantly or chasing whatever marketing trend happens to be getting attention that month.
The better question is usually much simpler: What is actually going to move this business forward? It might be the website, the messaging or how the business is showing up where customers are already looking. And sometimes the answer is realizing there’s something you don’t need to keep spending money on in the first place.
“I like being able to tell a client when I think something is a great idea,” Yokoyama said. “But I also like being able to tell them when I think they’re about to waste their money. Business owners need both.”
As Gritty Gal enters its fourth year, Yokoyama plans to keep the company intentionally small while continuing to grow its strategy, positioning, messaging and advisory work.
“I never started Gritty Gal because I wanted to build some huge agency,” she said. “I like being close to the work. I like knowing the people I work with and understanding what they’re trying to build. I tend to become part of the team pretty quickly, and I like it that way. The better I understand the business, the people and what’s actually happening day to day, the better I can market it.”
Three years in, that hasn’t changed.
“I still love sitting across from a business owner and hearing how they built the company and what makes it different,” Yokoyama said. “When you’re in the middle of running it every day, it can be hard to see the forest through the trees. Sometimes my job is helping them see what’s special about their business again, and then figuring out how to make sure their customers see it too.”
