Charleston County, municipal leaders announce final round of public outreach for 2026 Transportation Sales Tax referendum

Charleston County officials and local mayors will host a final series of public meetings throughout the county to share information with residents regarding the 2026 Transportation Sales Tax (TST) referendum, which will appear on the November 3 ballot. If approved, the program would continue the existing 2004 half-penny tax and generate approximately $4.25 billion over 25 years for roadway infrastructure, public transit, and greenspace preservation.
During each public meeting, county and municipal leaders will provide residents with information about the proposed projects and answer questions about the program.

The 2026 Transportation Sales Tax Program was developed after robust public outreach that included more than 80 public meetings, 29,000 public comments, more than 600 individual project requests, and approximately $68 billion in identified transportation needs. Proposed projects were evaluated using a 100-point scoring system based on public and municipal support, congestion relief, safety considerations, and consistency with County Council’s adopted guiding principles. Charleston County Council passed the third and final reading of the 2026 TST ordinance on July 1, 2026.
