South Carolina’s first associate degree in electrical technology launches at Midlands Technical College

Midlands Technical College (MTC) has launched South Carolina’s first associate degree in electrical technology, expanding opportunities for students seeking careers in one of the state’s most in-demand industries.

The Associate in Applied Science in Electrical Technology program builds on MTC’s previous Industrial Electrical program and reflects the evolving needs of the electrical workforce. Designed to prepare students for residential, commercial, industrial and low-voltage applications, the program offers comprehensive training in electrical systems, motor controls, smart technologies, security systems and the electrical infrastructure that supports modern manufacturing.

The program’s first cohort of students began coursework in Fall Semester 2026.

“Creating this program was about looking forward to where the industry is going and the opportunities we can create for our students,” said Electrical Technology Program Director Robert Zeigler. “Launching South Carolina’s first associate degree in Electrical Technology shows our commitment to preparing the next generation of electricians with the skills and knowledge they will need to lead an ever-changing industry. I am proud to say that we are not just preparing students for today’s jobs; we are helping prepare them for lifelong careers that will shape the future.”

The Electrical Technology degree combines classroom instruction with hands-on learning, allowing students to apply technical concepts and calculations to real-world electrical systems and equipment. The program is designed to serve students at all experience levels, from those entering the field for the first time to working professionals looking to expand their skills.

In addition to technical training, students develop the workplace competencies employers value most, including professionalism, accountability and reliability. MTC is also strengthening partnerships with regional employers to create direct pathways from the classroom to the workforce.

Graduates will be prepared for careers in residential and commercial electrical work, industrial electrical maintenance, and other sectors of the growing electrical industry.

“This program is about much more than industrial electrical work,” said James Liles, Electrical Technology professor at MTC. “Technology continues to evolve, and we want our students to be prepared for the wide range of opportunities available in today’s electrical industry. Innovation is the name of the game, and we have to stay ahead of it.”

“The electrical field offers more opportunities than many people realize,” Liles added. “Our goal is to help students discover where their interests fit and give them the skills and confidence to build successful careers.”

The launch of the Electrical Technology associate degree demonstrates MTC’s commitment to meeting workforce demands and providing students with innovative, career-focused education that supports South Carolina’s growing economy.
