A new home for the Dorchester County Coroner’s Office
October 1, 2026Dorchester County celebrated a significant milestone September 22 with the grand opening of its first standalone Coroner’s Office in Summerville.
Located on West Fifth North Street, the new facility provides the Coroner’s Office with a modern, purpose-built space after years of operating from shared rooms and a temporary mobile unit during construction.
The facility includes upgraded workstations, a 12-station morgue cooler, an on-site autopsy suite, X-ray capabilities and secure evidence storage. Private offices allow deputy coroners to conduct sensitive investigative work, while quiet, comfortable spaces provide families with greater privacy and dignity during difficult times.
Coroner Paul Brouthers spoke about the importance of the new facility and how it strengthens the office’s mission. County Council Chairman David Chinnis and Councilman Peter Smith also highlighted the importance of preparing for future growth and investing in resources that help the county serve residents with compassion and efficiency.
Guests also met Dr. Jamie Downs, who will conduct post-mortem examinations at the facility, and toured the new building.
