Apply today! CRFD launches fall hiring period for certified firefighters
October 7, 2026As the fall season arrives, experienced firefighters will have the opportunity to further their careers at one of the busiest departments in South Carolina.
The Columbia-Richland Fire Department has reopened its hiring window for ‘Certified Firefighters’ effective Thursday, October 1, 2026. Applicants who possess the necessary certifications are encouraged to apply at ColaFire.Net to be considered for a spot in CRFD’s Direct Hire Program in early 2027.
“This program is a fast track for qualified firefighters with a passion for the trade to join our ranks,” said Columbia-Richland Fire Chief Aubrey D. Jenkins. “ Since we first introduced it in 2021, several candidates have found their way to CRFD, been hired by our department and are currently excelling in their careers through promotions to new ranks and other professional opportunities. We welcome any firefighter with a strong passion to serve and a desire for new growth and advancement to apply.”
In 2025, CRFD handled more than 40,000 calls for service across the City of Columbia and Richland County. This was a 4% increase from the year before, as the Midlands of South Carolina continues to see a significant population increase. Columbia-Richland firefighters regularly respond to a wide array of emergencies, including fires, hazardous materials situations, civilian rescues and more.
At this time, CRFD’s base starting pay for a firefighter is $43,800. Recruits who meet the necessary qualifications and are hired into our Direct Hire Program will be paid at that rate to start.
CRFD firefighters are also eligible for incentive pay available to candidates who possess higher ed degrees (Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s). All firefighters are also eligible for extra pay through overtime opportunities!

All applicants with prior firefighting experience and Firefighter I and II certification through IFSAC and or Pro-Board will be eligible for CRFD’s Direct Hire Program. The program features an abridged training academy that enables hires to reach active service with the department in fewer weeks. Those who qualify can apply with the city as a ‘Certified Firefighter.’
