Protecting our homes and honoring our first responders

October 12, 2026

October marks National Fire Prevention Month—a vital reminder to safeguard our households and express heartfelt gratitude to the firefighters serving Mauldin, Simpsonville, and Fountain Inn.

Every October, National Fire Prevention Month calls attention to the simple, everyday habits that keep our families and neighborhoods safe from preventable home fires. While smoke alarms and escape routes are familiar essentials, this year’s national campaign—“Charge Into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower”—spotlights an increasingly common modern hazard: lithium-ion batteries and charging equipment.

From phones and tablets to e-bikes, lawn equipment, and household appliances, our homes are powered by more rechargeable tech than ever before. Taking a proactive approach this month can save lives.

Core Fire Prevention Checklist for Upstate Homes

  • Charge on Hard, Flat Surfaces: Avoid charging phones, laptops, and cordless tools on beds, rugs, or underneath pillows where heat can quickly build up. Always charge devices on firm, non-combustible surfaces like desks or countertops.

  • Stick with Certified Equipment: Use only the charging cords and battery packs supplied or approved by the manufacturer. Cheap, aftermarket chargers often lack critical overcharge and thermal-cutoff protections.

  • Test Alarms on Every Level: Smoke alarms should be installed inside each bedroom, outside sleeping quarters, and on every story of your home. Press the test button monthly and replace entire units that are ten years or older.

  • Keep Exit Routes Clear: Never charge heavy-duty rechargeable gear—such as electric scooters, lawnmowers, or power tools—in doorways, tight hallways, or near primary stairwells where a battery failure could block your escape.

  • Practice a Two-Way Escape Plan: Ensure every family member knows two clear ways out of every room, along with an established outdoor meeting spot like a mailbox or front-yard tree.

A Heartfelt Thank You to Our Golden Strip Fire Departments

Fire prevention is a daily community partnership, and the Golden Strip is protected by three dedicated, highly skilled municipal departments:

  • Mauldin Fire Department: Operating from multiple strategically placed stations across the city, Mauldin’s crews provide rapid structural firefighting, specialized vehicle extrication, and advanced emergency medical care, alongside active community risk reduction and school outreach.

  • Simpsonville Fire Department: Serving our bustling downtown corridor and rapidly growing residential subdivisions, Simpsonville firefighters maintain an exemplary standard of service, professional technical rescue capabilities, and hands-on public education programs.

  • Fountain Inn Fire Department: Blending historic small-town dedication with top-tier modern emergency response, Fountain Inn personnel safeguard our southern corridor, industrial parks, and surrounding rural fringes with steadfast professionalism and care.

Whether they are rushing toward blazing structures, providing lifesaving care at traffic collisions, or visiting local classrooms to teach children how to respond in an emergency, these men and women sacrifice family time, sleep, and personal safety every day to keep our towns secure.

To the chiefs, officers, firefighters, and support staff across Mauldin, Simpsonville, and Fountain Inn: Thank you for your service, courage, and commitment to the Golden Strip.
