Denmark Tech students selected for statewide HBCU STEM program
October 12, 2026Four Denmark Technical College students have been selected for the ninth cohort of the South Carolina Manufacturers and Commerce HBCU STEM Program, a yearlong initiative connecting students with employers and career opportunities in STEM fields.
Denmark Tech is the only technical college represented in the statewide cohort. The students launched their experience at the Year Nine Kickoff and Orientation at the South Carolina Manufacturers Council in Columbia.
The selected students are Aniah Porter, who is pursuing an associate of science; James Gonzalez, who is pursuing an associate of applied science in general technology; Shakeem Harris, who is pursuing an associate of applied science in human services; and Nuyorbia Carson, who is pursuing an associate of arts.
The students have grade-point averages ranging from 3.7 to 4.0.
“We are extremely proud to have our nominees selected for this outstanding program,” said Eric Brown, Ph.D., president and CEO of Denmark Technical College. “Their acceptance reflects their academic dedication, potential and readiness to represent Denmark Technical College as they engage with fellow students and industry leaders from across the state. Opportunities like this prepare our students for transformative futures.”
The SC HBCU STEM Program creates partnerships among South Carolina’s historically Black colleges and universities, their students and leading employers throughout the state. Through hands-on experiences and professional engagement, the program introduces students to a range of STEM careers while helping them develop the skills and connections needed to succeed in high-demand industries.
Participants attend monthly site visits to partner businesses during the fall and spring semesters. The program also includes project-based learning, career exploration, resume development, engagement with business leaders and a summer internship.
“This program gives our students the opportunity to connect what they are learning in the classroom with real careers and workplaces across South Carolina,” said Marci Middleton, Ph.D., vice president for academic affairs at Denmark Technical College. “The hands-on experiences and professional connections they gain will help them make informed decisions about their futures and enter the workforce with greater confidence.”
“Being selected for this program is an exciting opportunity to learn from professionals, explore different STEM careers and gain experience that will help prepare me for the future,” said Carson. “I am proud to represent Denmark Tech and look forward to making the most of every opportunity the program provides.”
