Hopsewee Plantation hosts “A Meeting of the Macabre” featuring Edgar Allan Poe and Anne Rice

Prepare for an atmospheric afternoon of gothic storytelling as Hopsewee Plantation and the Traveling Literary Theater of Charleston present A Meeting of the Macabre on Saturday, October 31, 2026 at 2:00 PM.

Set against the historic backdrop of the c. 1740 rice plantation along the river’s edge, this immersive theatrical experience invites guests to explore the minds, inner turmoil, and creative genius of two literary icons: Edgar Allan Poe and Anne Rice.

Two professional actors will step into the personas of Poe and Rice, sharing the challenges, disappointments, secrets, and inspirations that shaped their dark and immortal works. Through dramatic readings and evocative scene work, the performance brings the melancholic madness of Poe and the seductive, gothic realms of Rice vividly to life.

Choose Your Experience
To enhance the afternoon, guests can select one of two intimate culinary options before the event wraps up with plenty of time to enjoy evening Halloween festivities:

  • The Hopsewee Wine Table Experience: A curated selection of fine wines paired with an artisanal grazing board of gourmet cheeses and cured meats.

About the Venue:
Built roughly 40 years before the American Revolutionary War, Hopsewee Plantation holds a distinct place in American history as a major Lowcountry rice plantation and the birthplace of Thomas Lynch, Jr., one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Today, its live oaks, Spanish moss, and historic architecture provide an eerie and unforgettable setting for a journey into the macabre.
