South Carolina Association for Justice honors the life and legacy of Judge Alex Sanders

October 22, 2026

The South Carolina Association for Justice mourns the passing of Judge Alexander M. “Alex” Sanders Jr., a founding member and former president of the association whose life was defined by a commitment to justice, public service, and the people of South Carolina.

“Judge Sanders understood that the strength of our justice system is measured by how well it protects the rights of ordinary citizens,” said SCAJ President Kevin Dean. “He helped build an organization around that principle. While his accomplishments were extraordinary, perhaps his greatest legacy is the example he set of a life devoted to service, fairness, and the pursuit of justice.”

Judge Sanders was a larger-than-life figure in South Carolina’s legal and civic history. As a trial lawyer, legislator, jurist, educator, and university president, he brought wit and an unmistakable sense of purpose to every role he undertook.

As a founding member of our association, he helped establish an organization dedicated to protecting individual rights, preserving the civil justice system, and ensuring that every South Carolinian has a voice in our courts. His belief that justice must be accessible to all, regardless of wealth, power, or position, remains at the heart of our mission.

On behalf of our members, we extend our deepest condolences to his daughter, Zoe, his family, and the countless friends, colleagues, and former students whose lives he touched.

We are profoundly grateful for his leadership and friendship. SCAJ will honor his legacy by continuing to stand up for the rights of all South Carolinians and ensuring access to justice.
