Russell House expansion, a USC Next initiative, receives initial state approval
October 27, 2026
USC’s plans to modernize and expand the Russell House Student Union have cleared an important step, receiving Phase I approval from both the Joint Bond Review Committee (JBRC) and the State Fiscal Accountability Authority (SFAA).
This key approval will allow USC to explore replacing aging portions of the 71-year-old facility while renovating viable spaces. Planned improvements include a larger ballroom, more room for student organizations, enhanced dining and recreation options, and improved accessibility. The expansion responds to years of student advocacy and the needs of a growing campus.
Phase I will advance design and due diligence, after which JBRC and SFAA will have an opportunity to review the findings and consider final approval (known as “Phase 2”).
Like other USC Next initiatives, the project reflects USC’s commitment to responsible planning and strategic investment in students and the university’s future.
