Simpsonville launches text alert service as multi-year downtown transformation moves forward

October 27, 2026

As major construction reshapes the core of downtown Simpsonville, city officials are offering residents, commuters, and local business owners a direct line to real-time information.

The City of Simpsonville announced that the public can receive timely construction notifications, detour alerts, and project milestones delivered straight to their mobile phones by texting DowntownSVL to 38276.

The alert system comes as the city advances its ambitious Downtown Simpsonville Project—a multi-year, phased overhaul spanning roughly two miles of downtown corridors. While recent investments revamped destination hubs such as City Park and the municipal campus, connecting streets and subterranean utilities largely remained in their legacy conditions. The current effort aims to modernize that connective tissue while preserving Simpsonville’s historic small-town charm.

The Scope: What the Project Covers

Budgeted at approximately $31 million, the downtown revitalization represents an investment in critical infrastructure designed to support decades of future growth. Rather than simple resurfacing, crews are systematically reconstructing street segments from the ground up:

  • Subsurface Infrastructure: Replacing aging storm drainage networks, updating underground utilities, and burying overhead lines where feasible.

  • Roadbed Reconstruction: Complete excavation and repaving across ten designated street segments, including portions of North and South Main streets, Curtis Street, and College Street.

  • Pedestrian & Multimodal Upgrades: Wider, ADA-compliant sidewalks, improved curb ramps, decorative street lighting, upgraded traffic signals, and cohesive urban landscaping.

What’s Next: Phasing, Detours, and Traffic Patterns

Because work spans active commercial and residential districts, construction is unfolding in sequential phases to keep destinations accessible.

Key milestones and upcoming changes drivers and pedestrians should expect include:

  1. A New Downtown Circulation Loop: One of the most significant long-term shifts is the transition to a counter-clockwise traffic loop designed to improve vehicular flow and reduce pedestrian conflicts. Under the planned configuration, Curtis Street will run eastbound from Maple to College Street, College Street will move westbound back toward Maple, and Academy Street will direct traffic northbound between Curtis and College. East Curtis Street beyond College Street will retain two-way traffic with a dedicated center turn lane.

  2. Temporary Parking Adjustments: As specific blocks undergo drainage and sidewalk excavation, curb-side parking spaces will temporarily close. Permanent adjustments to the downtown parking footprint will take effect once street profiles are finalized.

  3. Timeline Toward Completion: Primary streetscape improvements are slated for substantial completion around August 2028, with ongoing schedules subject to weather conditions, utility coordination, and SCDOT reviews.

City leaders emphasize that emergency response access and business ingress will be maintained throughout all phases of construction.
