October 28, 2026

Calvin Whitmire, founder and executive director of Bridging the Gap Advocacy, has been named the 2026 Laurens County Hometown Hero by Modern Woodmen of America. The recognition was presented Oct. 22.

Modern Woodmen of America honors individuals each year who make a lasting difference in communities across the United States. Whitmire was selected for his leadership of Bridging the Gap Advocacy and the organization’s work developing young people throughout Laurens County.

Bridging the Gap Advocacy places special emphasis on serving young people with disabilities. Through programs focused on education, health and wellness, enrichment, exposure, agriculture and public speaking, the organization helps participants discover their gifts and build confidence for the future.

The results speak for themselves. Over the years, 32 young people involved with Bridging the Gap Advocacy have gone on to college or other forms of higher education.

“This recognition belongs to every young person who has walked through our doors and every person who has helped them along the way,” Whitmire said. “We believe every young person has a gift, including those with disabilities. Our job is to help them find it and give them the tools to share it with the world.”

Whitmire said seeing participants pursue higher education is one of the most rewarding parts of the work.

“When a young person who was once told what they couldn’t do goes on to college, that changes their life and their family’s life,” Whitmire said. “That is why we do what we do, and we are grateful to Modern Woodmen of America for shining a light on the work happening here in Laurens County.”
