Georgetown County joins nationwide Operation Green Light for Veterans, Nov. 4–11
October 28, 2026In recognition of Veterans Day and the service and sacrifices of our nation’s military veterans, Georgetown County will participate in Operation Green Light for Veterans, a nationwide initiative encouraging counties and communities to demonstrate their support for veterans and their families.
From Nov. 4–11, Georgetown County plans to illuminate designated County facilities with green lighting as a visible expression of gratitude and support for those who have served in the United States Armed Forces.
Georgetown County Council passed a resolution in support of Operation Green Light on Oct. 27. Veterans from the audience were asked to join Chairman Clint Elliott (center) for a photo with the resolution.
Led by the National Association of Counties (NACo) and the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers (NACVSO), Operation Green Light raises awareness of the unique challenges veterans may face, particularly when transitioning from military service to civilian life, while highlighting the resources and support available through local, state, and federal programs.
Now in its sixth year, Operation Green Light continues to expand nationwide. In 2025, 412 counties across 44 states participated in the initiative. This year, NACo and NACVSO are encouraging the nation’s 3,069 counties, parishes, and boroughs to join in demonstrating their appreciation for military veterans.
“Georgetown County is proud to join communities across the nation in recognizing the extraordinary service and sacrifices of our veterans,” said Angela Christian, Georgetown County Administrator. “Operation Green Light provides a simple yet meaningful opportunity to demonstrate that our appreciation extends beyond Veterans Day. By illuminating our community in green, we are sending a message to veterans and their families that their service matters, their sacrifices are remembered, and their continued contributions to our communities are valued.”
Georgetown County encourages residents, businesses, civic organizations and community partners to participate by replacing one exterior or visible interior light with a green bulb from Nov. 4–11. This simple gesture serves as a visible symbol of appreciation, recognition and solidarity with veterans and their families.
“A green light is a small thing. But when thousands of counties and partners turn one on together each November, it becomes something larger,” said NACo Executive Director Matthew Chase. “Operation Green Light for Veterans is a powerful signal that we see our veterans, we remember their service, and we owe them more than a thank you once a year. Their sacrifice didn’t end at discharge. Our gratitude shouldn’t either.”
Community members are also encouraged to share photographs of their green lights on social media using #OperationGreenLight and #GreenLightForVeterans to help spread awareness and inspire others to participate.
Through Operation Green Light, Georgetown County reaffirms its commitment to honoring military service, recognizing the ongoing needs of veterans and their families, and fostering a community where those who have served know they are appreciated and supported.
