Kiwanis Club salutes veterans on Veterans Day with American flags and scholarships
October 29, 2026The Kiwanis Club of Pawleys Island will display hundreds of flags honoring veterans and first responders from November 7 through December 12 on the front lawn of the former International Paper Field in Georgetown, SC.
The opening ceremony is scheduled for November 7 at 2:00 pm, featuring the Pawleys Island Concert Band and Georgetown Junior ROTC. There will also be a presentation of the Quilts of Honor. Volunteers make the quilts for service members as a personal expression of comfort, healing and gratitude for their service. Karin Perkins will present the Kiwanis quilt, and Laura Mellow will sing the National Anthem.
The 6th annual Field of Honor™ program features 300 3-foot by 5-foot flags flying in formation, each marked with a personalized tag honoring the name of a veteran, first responder or military group.
“The annual event draws hundreds of people who can walk through the field, read the dedication on each flag and share stores about their fallen heroes who have served in the United States Armed Forces,” said Kiwanis Field of Honor chairman Ronnie Craig.
Proceeds raised from flag program directly fund college scholarships for seniors in Georgetown and Pawleys Island high schools. Overtime, the Field of Honor project has increased from two scholarships in its initial year to 11 this year.
Following the closing ceremony on December 12 at 10:00 am, sponsors may collect their keepsake flags or choose to donate them back to the Kiwanis Club for future displays.
In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held inside the Howard Center Auditorium.
