South Carolina State Museum celebrates 38 years of discovery and looks ahead to ‘Make Way for MORE’ expansion

November 4, 2026

As the South Carolina State Museum celebrates 38 years as the state’s primary cultural storyteller, leadership is preparing for a monumental new chapter: an ambitious, multi-phase revitalization designed to reshape how visitors experience Palmetto State history, art, and innovation.

First opening its doors on October 29, 1988, in the historic 1894 Columbia Mills building along the Congaree River, the museum has grown into South Carolina’s premier multidisciplinary cultural center, spanning cultural history, natural history, science and technology, and the arts. Over the past nearly four decades, it has continually evolved—most notably with its 2014 “Windows to New Worlds” expansion, which brought a 55-foot planetarium dome, 4D theater, and a public observatory to the riverfront campus.

Now, the institution is looking toward 2028 with “Make Way for MORE,” a $15 million catalyst campaign spearheaded by the SCSM Foundation. Drawing from the broader Reimagine the Experience master project, the initiative will holistically renovate and modernize nearly 225,000 square feet of space inside and around the landmark mill facility.

Comprehensive Upgrades on the Horizon

The revitalization focuses heavily on revamping guest hospitality, modernizing historical galleries, and leaning into hands-on STEM education and entrepreneurship.

Key components of the upcoming transformation include:

  • First Floor Entrance & Hospitality Reset: A modernized public entryway, refreshed lobby and guest services hub, an enhanced Museum Store, and a new grand atrium.

  • Indoor & Outdoor Dining: A brand-new museum café featuring both interior and al fresco patio seating.

  • Expanded Campus Accessibility: Upgraded parking infrastructure, exterior façade refreshes, improved ADA accessibility, and an outdoor educational classroom.

  • Fourth Floor & Innovation Wing: Expanded exhibition galleries and a dedicated Innovation Wing aimed at celebrating Palmetto State inventors, creative industries, and youth STEM exploration.

Taking the Vision Across the State

To connect communities across South Carolina with the upcoming changes, the museum and foundation teams launched a statewide outreach tour titled “Hitting the Road for MORE.” Traveling to 12 cities across the state, museum leaders are meeting with school districts, regional civic partners, local museums, businesses, and donors to discuss upcoming exhibitions, spotlight local inventors, and build enthusiasm for the project.

Following fall stops in Aiken, Myrtle Beach, Rock Hill, and Greenville, upcoming tour stops include:

  • Camden: November 10 – 11, 2026

  • Columbia: December 8 – 10, 2026 (Additional regional dates to be announced in 2027.)

“As we celebrate 38 years, we are grateful to everyone who has been part of our story. And we are just getting started,” the museum shared in an anniversary statement.
