Arbor Day Foundation Designates Furman Tree Campus USA for Second Straight Year

February 24, 2010

GREENVILLE, SC – February 23, 2010 – For the second year in a row, the Arbor Day Foundation has recognized Furman University as a Tree Campus USA University for its dedication to campus forestry management and environmental stewardship.

The Tree Campus USA program should have a long-lasting impact at Furman by encouraging students and local citizens to plant trees and create healthier communities to be enjoyed for years to come, according to John Rosenow, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation.

Furman benefits from “exceptional tree-care practices” on campus and works with tree-care professionals in the community “to improve the tree canopy in Greenville,” Rosenow said.

The national program was launched two years ago. Furman and 28 other colleges and universities were named to the inaugural class in 2008, from Arizona State University to the University of South Carolina Upstate.

To receive the designation for a second year, Furman met five required core standards of tree care and community engagement in 2009. Those requirements included the establishment of a campus tree advisory committee; evidence of a campus tree-care plan; verification of dedicated annual expenditures on the campus tree-care plan; involvement in an Arbor Day observance; and the institution of a service-learning project aimed at engaging the student body.

Tree Campus USA is supported by a grant from Toyota.

The Arbor Day Foundation is a nonprofit conservation organization of nearly a million members with a mission to inspire people to plant, nurture and celebrate trees.
