CHARLESTON, SC – April 5, 2010 – CBS News Chief Washington Correspondent Bob Schieffer will be the featured speaker at the South Carolina Corps of Cadets commencement, which begins at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, May 8, 2010, in McAlister Field House.

A native of Texas and a former information officer in the U.S. Air Force, Schieffer began his journalism career at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram where he got an exclusive interview following President John F. Kennedy’s assassination when he gave Lee Harvey Oswald’s mother a ride to the police station. In 1965, he became the first reporter from a Texas newspaper to report from Vietnam.
This year marks Schieffer’s 53rd year as a reporter and his 41st year at CBS News. He has received virtually every award in broadcast journalism and has covered every presidential campaign and been a floor reporter at all of the Democratic and Republican National Conventions since 1972. Schieffer also is one of the few broadcast or print journalists to have covered all four major beats in the nation’s capital – the White House, the Pentagon, the State Department and Capitol Hill.
“Bob Schieffer is a perfect commencement speaker for the Class of 2010 not only for his in-depth connection and experience in politics, but for his long and outstanding career,” said Cadet Richard Jordan, Class of 2010 president. “He has had direct contact with the leaders of our country making the decisions that affect the future of all of the members of our class and the Corps. With his experiences in the political arena, he is sure to bring words that can guide us into the real world where a war is prominent, the job market is low, and the politics are intimidating.”
Schieffer had planned to retire in 2008. Instead, he published his fourth book, Bob Schieffer’s America, and moderated the final debate of the 2008 campaign. Schieffer was at the CBS helm to cover the election of the nation’s first African American president – Barack Obama.
Schieffer has received numerous awards, including seven Emmys. A member of the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame, he has written four books, was named a “Living Legend” by the Library of Congress, and along with his country music band Honky Tonk Confidential, made his debut at the Grand Ole Opry.
The speaker for The Citadel Graduate College commencement on Sunday, May 9, will be announced at a later date.
