Central Carolina Community Foundation Awards $133,150 in Scholarships to South Carolina Students

October 3, 2013

COLUMBIA, SC – October 3, 2013 – Central Carolina Community Foundation has awarded 53 scholarships totaling $133,150 to some of South Carolina’s best and brightest students.

The Community Foundation manages more than 35 scholarship funds that provide educational opportunities for future generations. Many of the Foundation’s scholarship funds have been set up in honor or memory of a loved one or someone who has helped the donor become successful in life.

For example, the Rogers and Meredith Scholarship Fund originally started in 1998 as the Rogers and Meredith College Fund. It was established to honor the families of Consolidated Systems, Inc. (CSI) employees and other students in the community who may not otherwise be able to afford a college education. It was available to children of full-time employees of CSI and children living in certain residential treatment facilities. Since 2001, the Rogers & Meredith Scholarship has awarded nearly $840,000 in scholarships to 78 students. Of these 78, 28 students were supported through four years of college. With little exception, a recipient will receive $5,000 for the academic school year.

In 2012, the Rogers and Meredith families established a second scholarship to provide academic scholarships for K-12 students with diagnosed disabilities to attend Glenforest School, whose mission is to provide an outstanding education to those who have not thrived in a traditional learning environment. The fund helps enable students who may not otherwise have the financial resources to attend Glenforest School where they can receive the specialized designed instruction, positive learning environment, resources and support necessary for them to excel and achieve their personal goals. Glenforest meets the academic and social needs of students with learning differences, empowering them to realize self-worth and achieve their full potential.

Our scholarship funds are just one of many ways that donors in our community work with the Foundation to make a difference in the Midlands, said Foundation President and CEO JoAnn Turnquist. Each scholarship has its own specific purpose and eligibility criteria according to the recommendations of the donor, so each of these students have distinguished themselves in different ways. We congratulate each of our scholarship recipients and wish them well as they continue to learn and grow.
