Charleston high schoolers attend STEM-focused field trip hosted by OhmIQ

April 8, 2025

North Charleston’s OhmIQ partners with CCSD’s West Ashley Center for Advanced Studies to give students an inside look at careers in science and engineering.

OhmIQ, a North Charleston business developing revolutionary heating technology, partnered with Charleston County School District’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) department to provide 17 local high school students with an immersive STEM experience last week. Students from West Ashley Center for Advanced Studies learned about unique career opportunities in engineering and physics during a career development panel, toured OhmIQ’s state-of-the-art lab, and engaged in hands-on experiments for a unique look into the science behind Ohm’s Law.

OhmIQ strives to give back to the North Charleston community by investing in the next generation of scientists and engineers right here in Charleston. As part of its mission to educate the masses about the power of ohmic technology, a centuries-old law of physics that calculates the relationship between voltage, current, and resistance within a material, OhmIQ has committed to hosting similar experiences for students on a regular basis. OhmIQ recently partnered with the South Carolina Aquarium to support a cleanup initiative for the Cooper River, showcasing their dedication to environmental stewardship and strengthening their commitment to the Charleston community.

“This week, we were proud to welcome local students into our facility and demonstrate the power of careers in STEM,” says OhmIQ Office Manager and Executive Coordinator Kelly Gertino. “This experience was the first step in our larger push to support our Lowcountry community through education. We look forward to continuing our educational initiatives by partnering with like-minded organizations in Charleston and beyond.”

West Ashley Center for Advanced Studies is one of three regional career centers where CCSD high school students can partake in dedicated career programs and internships while working closely with community partners to further their education and gain valuable experience. “The students enjoyed the detailed demonstrations of ohmic heating, along with getting a glimpse into a career in engineering,” said Rob Brunson, Technology Integration Director at OhmIQ. “We deeply appreciate CCSD’s partnership and enjoyed creating a fun learning environment.”
