City of Charleston Hurricane Dorian September 16 recovery update

September 16, 2019

Over the weekend and throughout the day today, city crews and contractors continued working to clear debris from Hurricane Dorian citywide.

Citizens can track the progress of debris removal in specific zones throughout the city by viewing the city’s storm debris collection map, linked here: http://gis.charleston-sc.gov/hurricane-maps-tools/

Today, crews collected storm debris in the following zones, where work will continue tomorrow:

  • West Ashley: W0, W1, W3, W7, W8, W9
  • James Island: J2, J4, J6
  • Johns Island: JO1, JO3
  • Downtown: C1, C3, C4
  • Daniel Island: BK

In accordance with FEMA requirements, debris monitors have been hired to maintain an official record of the volume of debris being collected citywide. There are currently openings for additional debris monitors, and the job posting can be viewed here: https://rostan.applicantpro.com/jobs/1184065.html

In the meantime, city staff are set to receive training tomorrow in order to temporarily fill these positions and expedite the collection process as much as possible.

Citizens are reminded that ongoing debris collection excludes non-vegetative bulk items, such as household appliances, bedding and furniture.

Garbage collection is currently running on a normal schedule citywide.

To ensure an effective collection process, and to allow crews to continue to move throughout neighborhoods as quickly as possible, citizens are reminded to separate their garbage from their debris when placing it at the curb. Additionally, citizens are asked to have all of their debris ready for pick up no later than Sunday, September 22nd.

Homeowners are reminded that any debris and construction materials resulting from home repairs covered by insurance should be removed and disposed of by the private contractor and not put out for municipal pick up.

Open burning is not permitted in the city, and citizens are reminded that leaves must be bagged in paper lawn and refuse bags for collection, as loose leaves clog storm drains.

Information on the current recycling collection schedule, managed by Charleston County, can be found on their website: https://www.charlestoncounty.org/departments/environmental-management/index.php

Citizens are encouraged to keep sandbags provided by the city through the remainder of hurricane season, which concludes on November 30.

Street sweeping crews continue to move throughout the city conducting storm cleanup, and the normal street sweeping schedule will resume thereafter.

Residents are encouraged to continue to report damage and suspected dumping violations to the city’s Citizen Services Desk at 843-724-7311.
