Civil engineering students win national award

CHARLESTON, SC – May 2, 2012 – The Citadel student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers was named the 2012 winner of the ASCE Robert Ridgway Award for the most outstanding student chapter. The Citadel was selected from a field of 281 colleges and universities across the United States and 11 countries.
ASCE’s national committee on student activities selects the winning college through a rigorous review based on an annual report prepared by student officers. This is the first time in the history of The Citadel chapter that the college has received this award.
“Winning this prestigious award is the result of many hard years of student teamwork and excellent faculty support,” said Clay Settle, the ASCE student chapter president. “And I am honored to be able to accept this recognition on behalf of The Citadel.”
The Citadel ASCE chapter has more than 100 active members. The organization has held 27 professional meetings, organized seven field trips and participated in major events, such as the Workshop for Student Leaders, which was held in Portland, Maine, as well as the Battery to Beach Service and Citadel Science Night. In addition, the chapter made a number of professional presentations, participated in volunteer projects, hosted the National Engineer’s Week events on campus, and organized a career fair that attracted 21 companies.
“The Ridgway Award is the civil engineering Academy Award for student performance and achievement,” said Dean of Engineering Ron Welch. “Over the past two years The Citadel was recognized as an award finalist, but this year our students’ outstanding record of success has been nationally recognized. It is an honor to teach and serve alongside such incredibly talented students.”
Earlier this year, Citadel students earned third place in the annual ASCE Carolinas Conference hosted by Clemson University as well as a top 30s finish in the National Student Steel Bridge Competition hosted by Texas A&M. Other recent student highlights include:
