Class of 2014 breaks 5 applications records

August 2, 2010

CHARLESTON, SC – August 2, 2010 – As The Citadel prepares for the arrival of the Class of 2014, interest in a challenging, traditional military-style college education with a focus on leadership development is at an all-time high among women, minorities, especially African Americans, and South Carolina residents.
We are excited by the prospect of another record-setting class at The Citadel, said Sam Hines, dean and provost of the college.  Clearly, The Citadel remains a popular option with students and families seeking top-notch academics and a superior leadership experience.

As of Monday, July 19, the Office of Admission has received 2.568 applications for the class that will report Aug. 14. The number breaks the record of 2,363 applications set last year. In addition The Citadel has received a record number of applications from women, minorities and South Carolina residents so far this year.

New record                            Oldrecord

Women                                   275                                          264 (2007)

Minorities                                 657                                          522 (2009)

African Americans                  368                                          290 (2007)

South Carolina residents         913                                          772(2009)

The Citadel expects to matriculate between 725 and 750 young men and women in the Class of 2014. The Class of 2013, which matriculated in August 2009, was the largest class in 34 years with 721 freshmen.

“The last 10 years have been the best 10 years in the college’s history for applications and admissions,” said retired Marine Lt. Col. John Powell, director of admissions.

The Citadel gives every cadet the opportunity to learn leadership skills and apply those skills to their daily lives as mentors in the 2,135-member South Carolina Corps of Cadets. When students graduate they go on to be principled leaders in the military and in the global marketplace.

“Students competing for a spot at The Citadel want more from their education than what a traditional college or university experience can give them,” Powell said. “In addition, our reputation for an outstanding educational experience is highly valued by our students and their parents. They know that what they will learn here through our unique leadership development program will give them an edge over their peers in all walks of life after graduation.”
