Clemson CFO promoted, takes on new duties

CLEMSON, SC – May 15, 2012 – Clemson University President James F. Barker announced that Chief Financial Officer Brett A. Dalton has been promoted to the newly created position of vice president for finance and operations, in recognition of a significant broadening of his duties.
Dalton, who was named CFO in 2007 to head the university’s finance division, also now has responsibility for leadership and management of the university’s facilities, maintenance, procurement, environmental health and safety and human resources departments. He also will assume additional responsibility in the area of university strategic planning and implementation of the school’s 10-year plan.
Dalton serves as an ex-officio director of the Clemson University Foundation, the Clemson University Real Estate Foundation and the Clemson University Research Foundation.
“Brett plays an increasingly valuable role in the operation of the university and has taken on many additional duties through administrative restructurings that consolidated and eliminated positions,” Barker said. “It is appropriate that we recognize and reward people who are not only doing good work but also taking on additional duties to help the university operate more efficiently and effectively.”
Dalton earned a Bachelor of Science (Class of ’88) and a master’s degree in economics (Class of ’90) from the Walker School of Economics at Clemson.
Prior to assuming the position of CFO, he served as executive assistant for finance and administration for the Division of Academic Affairs. Before that, as director of financial planning, he created the university’s first comprehensive financial plan.
“I’m honored to be a part of a large team of faculty and staff that have pulled together to serve Clemson during one of its most challenging periods,” Dalton said. “I look forward to working more closely with faculty, staff, students and other members of the team as Clemson refines and implements its plan, a plan that rewards and builds on the university’s incredible progress over the past several years.
As a Thurmond Research Fellow of Clemson’s Strom Thurmond Institute, he managed numerous research projects, most notably a project to assess the impact of the Superfund statute on South Carolina communities. He has authored and co-authored research articles and publications ranging from environmental policy research and financial markets analyses to tax and income studies.
Dalton also serves as commissioner of the South Carolina Deferred Compensation Commission, director of the Palmetto Conservation Foundation, and board member of Pickens County Red Cross.
