Clemson to award honorary degree to Greenville businesswoman at May 11 Commencement

CLEMSON, SC – May 1, 2012 – Greenville business leader Minor Mickel Shaw will receivean Honorary Doctorate of Humanities during Clemson University’scommencement exercises Friday, May 11, in Littlejohn Coliseum.

Shaw will receive her degree at the first of three Commencementceremonies. Commencement was divided into three ceremonies this year toaccommodate the many family members and friends who attend.

Graduates in Clemson’s colleges of Agriculture, Forestry and LifeSciences; and Engineering and Science will receive degrees in a 9:30a.m. ceremony, during which Shaw will be honored. A second ceremonywill begin at 2 p.m. for graduates in the colleges of Architecture,Arts and Humanities; and Health, Education and Human Development. Thethird ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. for students in the College ofBusiness and Behavioral Science.

Tiger Cup Speech Competition winner Kerry Donovan Williams, who willreceive her degree in industrial engineering, will speak at the 2 p.m.ceremony. Trustee Medal recipient Kristin Marie Bowers, a juniormajoring in animal and veterinary science, will speak at the 6:30 p.m.ceremony.

Shaw is president of the private investment company Micco LLC. Shehas served as a trustee for numerous foundations, including the DukeEndowment, Hollingsworth Funds, Belle Baruch Foundation,BlueCross-BlueShield Foundation of South Carolina and Daniel-MickelFoundation.

Shaw has been recognized as one of the Top 25 Most Influential Peoplein Greenville and as Greenville County’s Economic DevelopmentAmbassador for 2010. She also has been awarded South Carolina’s Order ofthe Palmetto, the first Riley Institute Wilkins Award for Citizenshipin South Carolina, the Greenville Chamber of Commerce Chairman’s Awardand the Athena Leadership Award.

Shaw serves on the Clemson University President’s Advisory Board andalso is a past chairwoman of the Independent Colleges and Universitiesof South Carolina, the Governor’s School for the Arts Foundation, theRoper Mountain Science Center Association, the University of NorthCarolina Arts & Humanities Foundation and the Wofford College boardof trustees.

Shaw is a graduate of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hilland has received honorary degrees from Furman University and WoffordCollege.

Seating for the ceremonies is available on a first-come, first-servedbasis. Additional seating will be available on the coliseum’sconcourse, where guests can watch the ceremony live on large-screentelevisions.
